Which U.S. coins contain silver
The date tells you most of what you need to know. Here are the common U.S. silver coins and how much silver they hold.

New Morgans and Peace dollars
Since 2021 the U.S. Mint has also struck Morgan and Peace dollars for collectors in .999 fine silver. Those come in Mint packaging and are easy to tell apart from the originals.

Two silver coins of the same type can be valued quite differently.

How a quantity of worn 90% silver is counted
Worn pre-1965 dimes, quarters and halves are usually tallied by their total face value. Every dollar of face value in those coins holds about the same amount of silver, whichever mix of coins makes it up.
That makes a large quantity simple to count once the better pieces have been set aside.
Larger holdings of silver are welcome
Call or send a request to arrange a time. We set aside the pieces that deserve a separate look before anything is valued by weight.

We start with what the piece is: the coin type, date and mint letter, or the markings on a bar or round.

Proof and mint sets with silver
Some sets contain silver coins and many do not. The year and the packaging tell them apart.
- Proof sets made before 1965 hold 90% silver dimes, quarters and halves.
- Sets from 1965 to 1970 can include a 40% silver Kennedy half.
- The Mint has sold separate silver proof sets in later years, labeled as silver.
- Some Eisenhower dollars sold to collectors, in blue envelopes or brown boxes, are 40% silver. Those from circulation contain none.

Please bring the silver in its tins, tubes, rolls or albums, with your photo ID. You are welcome to start with part of it and show us the rest on another day.

Our shop is in Lowell, a Benton County town on the I-49 corridor. Drive times are estimates without traffic.

Silver coin questions
How can I tell whether a quarter is silver?
Check the date first: 1964 or earlier means 90% silver. Then look at the edge. A silver quarter has a solid silver-gray edge, while later quarters show a copper stripe.
Are my Kennedy half dollars silver?
Kennedy halves dated 1964 are 90% silver and those dated 1965 to 1970 are 40% silver. Kennedy halves from circulation dated 1971 or later contain no silver.
Is a worn Morgan dollar still worth showing you?
Yes. Every original Morgan dollar holds about three-quarters of a troy ounce of silver, and some dates carry collector value even with wear.
Should I separate the silver from the rest of my coins?
It helps, but you do not have to. If you do sort them, leave any rolls, holders and sets exactly as they are.
How do I spot a wartime silver nickel?
Turn it over. Silver nickels from mid-1942 to 1945 carry a large P, D or S above the dome of Monticello. Other Jefferson nickels show a smaller letter somewhere else, or none.
