Two kinds of value in one coin
Every gold coin has a metal value set by its weight and purity. Some also have a collector value on top of the metal, driven by how scarce the coin is and how well it has survived. An evaluation separates the two and tells you which one drives the value.
A one-ounce American Gold Eagle bought a few years ago usually tracks the gold market closely. A pre-1933 U.S. gold piece in strong condition, or a scarce date, can be worth meaningfully more than its gold alone. Both are welcome; they are simply evaluated differently.

How a gold coin is evaluated
What shapes the value
- Issue & purity
- What the coin is and how much fine gold it contains — a one-ounce coin and a fractional coin are not evaluated the same way.
- Date & mintmark
- For older U.S. and world gold, the year and mint can separate a common coin from a scarce one.
- Condition
- Original surfaces matter. Wear, cleaning, and damage all affect how a collectible coin is valued.
- Current demand
- The gold market moves, and collector interest in particular series moves with it.

Questions
Selling gold coins, answered
How do you decide if a gold coin is worth more than its metal?
We identify the exact issue, then examine its date, mintmark, and condition. A common modern coin usually tracks its gold content, while a scarce date or a well-preserved older coin can carry collector value above the metal. We explain which applies to yours.
What is special about pre-1933 U.S. gold?
U.S. gold coins struck before 1933 — such as $2.50, $5, $10, and $20 pieces — often carry collector interest on top of their gold content, depending on the date, mint, and condition. They are evaluated differently from a modern bullion coin.
Do you buy foreign gold coins?
Yes, where appropriate. World gold such as Sovereigns, Francs, and Pesos is considered alongside U.S. issues, weighed for gold and examined for any collector value.
What about plain gold bars and rounds?
Those are evaluated as bullion by weight, purity, and markings rather than by date and mintmark. See the bullion page for how that works.
